A New Telebehavioral Health Opportunity to Support Veterans
We are seeking mental health professionals to join our growing national network of 11,000+ providers, including licensed nurses, massage therapists, and physical therapists. These mental health providers will participate in an exciting new initiative: providing telehealth counseling to Veterans via the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the nation’s largest integrated health system.
The United States Veteran population is experiencing an epidemic of opioid addiction, suicides and suicidal ideation, PTSD, and other mental health disorders, making accessible and effective counseling services more critical than ever. Meet Dr. Gabriela Bronson-Castain, the director of Zeel’s behavioral health program.
This new initiative adds to Zeel’s growing relationship with VA, for which Zeel currently provides in-home, medical massage therapy for chronic pain.
How the VA’s Telebehavioral Health Program Works
- Zeel receives referrals from a VA care provider.
- If a therapist accepts the referral through Zeel, he or she provides the care via video for the duration of the referral period (typically 26 or 52 weeks).
- Zeel handles all billing, claims management, any denials and resubmissions. Zeel also facilitates and provides guidance on required technology, including the EHR.
Provider Payment
- Based on Medicare rates and accounting for Zeel’s technology and support, providers are paid at $75 (LCSW) and $100 (PsyD) for a 60-minute clinical hour that includes time for documentation.
- The earning potential for a 26-week referral is therefore $1,950 (LCSW) or $2,600 (PsyD). For 45-minute sessions, providers will be paid $50 (LCSW) and $65 (PsyD) per session, with an earning potential of $1,300 (LCSW) or $1,690 (PsyD) for a 26-week program.
EARNING POTENTIAL | |||
Licensure | 1 Session per Week |
5 Sessions per Week |
10 Patients/Year x 26 Sessions/Patient |
PhD/PsyD | $100 | $500 | $26,000 |
LCSW, LPC, LMFT | $75 | $375 | $19,500 |
Benefits to Providers
- Set your own schedule as an independent contractor.
- Earn supplemental income without spending time actively seeking new clients or managing medical claims, so you can focus on providing committed, quality care for the duration of a referral.
- Reimbursement for late cancellations and no-shows: While the VHA does not reimburse Zeel for no-shows or cancellations, we know they happen and are inconvenient. Zeel reimburses behavioral therapists $25 for late cancellations (i.e. within 1 hour of start time) and for no-shows.
Training Opportunities for Providers
Providers who are onboarded with Zeel will get access to the following tools:
- Psych/Armor (educational website approved by the VHA to help therapists understand veteran and military culture).
- TheraNest, Zeel’s telehealth practice management tool.
- CE credits (coming soon).
Provider Responsibilities & Commitments
- Adherence to VHA standards by utilizing interventions that address Veteran diagnoses and providing quality care.
- Provide weekly therapy sessions and SOAP notes documentation.
- Submit additional documentation such as monthly progress summaries, and treatment extension requests (VHA requirements).
- For telebehavioral therapy appointments, providers will be connected to a patient referral from VA for a standard episode of care (SEOC) for a 26- or 52-week period at a typical rate of one appointment per week.
- This referral paradigm means that a single referral may last 6 to 12 months. The most common referrals are for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
